Overview

"Spice & Spirit" is a multimedia cultural heritage initiative that aims to celebrate, document, and promote the rich, diverse, and vibrant cultural landscape of Zanzibar. Known as the "Spice Island," Zanzibar is a melting pot of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences that have shaped its unique traditions, music, dance, cuisine, language, and religious practices.

This project will explore the island’s multicultural identity through documentary film, interactive exhibitions, oral histories, traditional performances, and culinary showcases, capturing the essence of Zanzibar's intangible heritage and bringing it to local, regional, and international audiences.

Objectives

The LAP is Zanzibar’s roadmap for community-led climate resilience. It empowers local voices and traditional knowledge to guide our response to climate threats, with a strong focus on:

  • Cultural Documentation: Record and preserve oral histories, traditional songs, rituals, dances, and crafts that reflect Zanzibar’s multicultural history.
  • Public Engagement: Curate a traveling multimedia exhibition across Zanzibar and major East African cultural centers.
  • Global Awareness: Produce a high-quality documentary and digital archive accessible online to global audiences.
  • Youth Involvement: Train and engage local youth in documentation, storytelling, and media production skills.
  • Sustainable Tourism: Promote cultural tourism through storytelling, traditional culinary experiences, and artisan showcases.
