Zanzibar Wellness Rising is a transformative, community-driven initiative aimed at revolutionizing health and wellness across Zanzibar by blending traditional healing wisdom with modern public health strategies. This grassroots project seeks to improve healthcare accessibility, empower local wellness champions, and create a resilient, self-sustaining health ecosystem that centers the community as the architect of its own wellness destiny.

Rooted in local knowledge and driven by participatory leadership, the project targets preventable diseases, mental health awareness, maternal and child health, and lifestyle-based non-communicable diseases. Our integrated approach combines mobile clinics, wellness education, nutrition programs, mental health outreach, and eco-wellness centers to foster holistic, lifelong wellbeing.

Goals & Objectives:

Primary Goal:

To create a sustainable, community-led health and wellness model in Zanzibar that improves public health outcomes, increases community engagement, and strengthens local health systems.

Objectives:

  • Train and deploy 100+ Community Wellness Ambassadors (CWAs) across Unguja and Pemba.
  • Launch 5 Mobile Wellness Clinics to serve remote villages monthly.
  • Establish 3 Eco-Wellness Centers integrating natural therapies and health education.
  • Reach 50,000+ residents with health screenings, education, and wellness services within 2 years.
  • Reduce preventable illnesses (malaria, hypertension, diabetes, maternal mortality) by 25% in target areas by year three.

Key Activities:

    Community Health & Wellness Training

  • Train CWAs in basic health care, nutrition, mental health first aid, and traditional practices.
  • Mobile Wellness Clinics

  • Provide vaccinations, screenings (diabetes, hypertension, HIV), maternal care, and health education.
  • Eco-Wellness Centers

  • Establish centers offering yoga, nutrition guidance, counseling, herbal medicine, and traditional healing.

  • Host quarterly events to promote community engagement in wellness, featuring local leaders and practitioners.

  • Develop a mobile app & SMS system for health tips, reminders, and telemedicine consultations in Swahili.
